Carving & Inking Complete.
To smooth out the lines on the bird and snake wrapping around the board, I used a standard carving knife, as opposed to a C or V gouge. Cutting across the grain was causing little "skips" in the carve, which did nothing for the piece. The knotwork is lightly carved, and the design is based on Haraldr Bluetooth's great memorial stone to his parents at Jelling, Jylland (p.45, "Runes: Reading the Past", R.I. Page). The inking was done with walnut ink - perhaps not the same type of black walnut as those found in northern Europe at the time, but still dark enough to produce a nice stain.
