Carving & Inking Complete.
To smooth out the lines on the bird and snake wrapping around
the board, I used a standard carving knife, as opposed to a C or V gouge.
Cutting across the grain was causing little "skips" in the carve, which
did nothing for the piece. The knotwork is lightly carved, and the design
is based on Haraldr Bluetooth's great memorial stone to his parents at
Jelling, Jylland (p.45, "Runes: Reading the Past", R.I. Page). The inking
was done with walnut ink - perhaps not the same type of black walnut as
those found in northern Europe at the time, but still dark enough to produce
a nice stain.
