9th Century Viking Scroll

by Lady Kayleigh McWhyte
Barony of An Dubhaigheainn, East Kingdom

Following is a project comissioned under contract to Lord Turgeis Haakonsen and Lady Sunniba Kyrre of the Kingdom of Atlantia. The piece is based upon work existing at the time of Sunniva's persona, and the runes (technical term is Futhark) are done in the Germanic style. As this project approaches the ending, I will provide here a listing of the futhark used in the creation of the scroll, complete with the names of each individual stick-rune. As futhark is a more phoenetic language, please note the exclusion of the letters Q, V, C, Y, V, and X. I have substituted phoenetic alternatives such as "kw" and "f" for qu and v respectively, and other substitutions will appear as you read on.

The knotwork design that creates the borders can be found in the borders of Haraldr Bluetooth's memorial stone at the market town of Jelling, in Jylland, Denmark. While the stone itself is dated to approx 980 AD at the time of his death, the carving itself is the most suitable and interesting I could find for a display of nobility. Such prominent displays upon runestones were very rare, but they did exist. The appearance of heraldry in this particular piece, however, is purely a concept given to the SCA for purposes of an Award of Arms for Lady Sunniba, dating to A.S. 33 in the West Kingdom (from whence she originally came).

Without further ado.... the work.
Enjoy.
